Personal background: Fowzia Raoufi, daughter of Abdul Raouf, was born in 1970, in the fifth district of Maimana city (Afghan Kot area) in Faryab province. She is married and has one daughter. She has traveled to France, London, Canada, the Netherlands, Belgium, India, Turkey, Germany, France and Saudi Arabia for international conferences. Raoufi is interested in reading. Her first language is Dari and she also speaks Uzbek, English and Pashto.

Education: Raoufi completed her secondary education at Sitara High School, Faryab in 1989. She got her bachelor’s degree from the Pedagogical Institute in Faryab province in 1993.

Civil society/NGO connections: Raoufi has worked with International NGOs.

Previous occupation: Raoufi has worked in both government and non-governmental offices, including international organizations. After receiving her bachelor’s degree, Raoufi worked as a teacher and then as the principal of high schools in both Faryab province and Mazar-e-Sharif until the Taliban period began. After the Taliban came to power, she worked as a field officer for Doctors without Borders, then at the United Nation’s Children Fund (UNICEF) as focal point/communications officer for two years in sectors including water supply, education and health in Faryab province. Raoufi also worked with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) for 18 months in the security department and at the National Solidarity Program as a regional officer.

2005 Parliament: Raoufi was elected to parliament in 2005 with 4,897 votes. During the 2005 parliament she served on the Cultural and Religious Affairs Commission.

Other information: Raoufi has been outspoken during her time in parliament about the lack of services available to women in Faryab.
